Six degrees of separation? Think again

Very interesting new research on the narrowing distance between us all, thanks to Facebook.

Being a Hungarian and knowing that Hungary is a small country with a possibly less cultural influence than - for example - Germany, I was really surprised to see that the authors of this article quoted the Hungarian poet and writer, Frigyes Karinthy. I have never expected that a foreigner reads this particular story (Chains, 1929) from him, but it (probably a translated version) has been obviously read by non-Hungarians, as well.
In order to put the reference to Karinthy’s “Chain” into context, I just shortly wanted to comment on it how the “small-world / six friends distance” idea has emerged in his mind well before Milgram’s paper in 1967.
He lived in an era (first half of the 20th century) where several new technologies, inventions, machines emerged like automotive, airplane, radio which were amazing at that time. It was probably due to these impressions that he foresaw that these new technologies will shorten distances between people and will lead to more frequent interactions, faster spread of ideas, and redefinition of relations between people.
Best regards,
