The Pros and Cons of Social Networks and IT Job Seeking

"... an older gentlemen who worked in IT went on Facebook and positioned himself as more youthful by joining nightlife, connections and dance-club groups. That profile helped him get an interview ..."

During my research i came across various opinions about the potential of social networking. Depending on the purpose of a social network there are many advantages and disadvantages in being virtually connected plus visible for other people. In contrast to closed networks (business related or blogs) open networks are easy to access for everybody, even for recruiters!

I found a very interesting interview published in the CIO magazine about unforeseen risks of sharing private data in SN's. The interview was held by Denise Dubie, Network World senior editor, and Rona Borre, CEO of the IT recruitment firm Instant Technology in Chicago, in August 2008

According to the recruiter Rona Borre new technologies can not only torpedo job searches (in this case IT jobs) but also put at risk a possible match with the future employer. Information about peoples lifestyle and connection to others, visible at facebook etc., could endanger their reputation. Rona Borra highlights: „My rule of thumb is if my mom couldn't see it, I wouldn't put it up there.“

This interview illustrates only one hazardous aspect of being embedded in a virtual SN. However, to perceive SN in a wider context, enjoy the examples the recruiter came up with! Nevertheless SN could be a phantastic tie, used consciously and in awareness of some „side effects“.

Good recap of sensible advice. I also like the link on the first page to the 20 Most Useful Career Sites for IT Professionals, although it is very US-Centric (and advertising-driven?)

Linkedin was added to the About.com Top 10 Employment site list with 2 other sites but linkedin is still the only social netwoking site on the list. 3 newest job sites on top list are:

www.linkedin.com (professional networking)
www.indeed.com (aggregated job listings)
www.realmatch.com (matches you to the perfect job)

Good luck to all those searching for jobs.
