Sicilian Mafia and Social Networking

Although the first historical advantages of business social networking have been discovered in China, the most sophisticated system has been developed by Sicilian mafia’s members, according to them a good “networker” should follow a few basic rules that have been proven over time and improved by experience of the community. The most known fact is that Sicilian mafia community is strongly based on private relationships. Members of mafia are supported to create new relationships, even if these relationships are built only for the reason of business. This feature is similar to the “modern” business networking.
Here are two basic mafia social networking rules:
  • No member of mafia makes a deal that would be unfavorable for him at the moment of the deal or in the future.
  • Mafia community has its own technique that based on following common rules, creates mutual bonds of trust.

There is only one feature that differentiates mafia from a regular community. The mistrust and paranoia are created on purpose within the mafia community.

Rocking application of social networking! Can be translated to other countries, like Russia or Ukraine

Interesting idea. A bit more on the nature of the networks and how to measure network effects would have been useful
