According to an article in the October 2012 edition of Psychology Today, the health benefits of social networks are enormous and it would seem a necessity if we are to be healthy and live a long, fruitful, and happy life.
The article claims, "Low levels of social interaction have the same effects as smoking 15 cigarettes a day-and worse effects than being obese or not exercising." While it might be necessary, at times, to have some "me" time, the article and the research it talks about shows that for the most part living a social life has more health benefits than one in isolation.
But for those who would still prefer a little more solitary life, take comfort in knowing that it isn't just about how many friends you have, but also the depth of those friendships. Research showed that those who had a close friend to turn to during times of anxiety, exhibited lower blood pressure than those who didn't.
