Two weeks ago I received an email from Orkut saying that their
platform will be closed by end of September. I was not shocked, I have not
visited Orkut in ages; however, it was very sentimental and nostalgic for me
that to say goodbye to Orkut. As most of you know Orkut was one of the pioneer
social media platforms back in early 2000. Here is an article on why Orkut is
giving up on social media. ( http://www.exchange4media.com/56571_why-orkut-failed.html

Google obviously lost competition to Facebook on creating a popular social platform. Google could not keep up with a competition even with introducing
G+. As Professor Rusty Tunnard mentioned probably the only active users on G+ are Google
employees! Google had no offering on G+ so they couldn’t convince users to
switch. I am still using Gmail as my main email but when it comes to social
platform I use Facebook to interact with my friends.
In my opinion which social platform you are on is depending on trends, what’s cool, innovation that platforms offers you and probably some luck!
One of the most popular social platform in East European countries is vk.com, they have more than 100 million active users. It simply looks like Facebook in early days!
As we look at rise of Twitter or Snapchat we can easily conclude that users are not married to their social platforms. They easily can jump from one to another. Most of us are using Linkedin as our professional social platform, however Angel List has been trying to compete with Linkedin. They are doing a great job so you never know, one day they are going to be number professional social platform.
So Facebook days will be over if they continue to offer the same thing over and over again!(and bother you with annoying ads!) Being number one makes the job even more difficult. New generations are hungry for new cool platforms with new offerings, and no one is married to his/her Facebook page! What do you think?
